As Singapore’s population continues to age, many older adults face challenges such as social isolation, loneliness, and limited social support. Befrienders play an important role in providing companionship, emotional encouragement, and connecting seniors with appropriate community resources, helping them age well within the community.

This one-day course equips participants with the essential knowledge, practical skills, and confidence to serve effectively as a befriender for seniors requiring social support. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the responsibilities and boundaries of a befriender, while learning how to build trust and meaningful relationships through empathy, active listening, and effective communication.

The course also covers practical approaches to conducting safe and purposeful home visits, engaging seniors through simple meaningful activities, recognising signs of distress or situations that require additional attention, and understanding the appropriate escalation and referral processes. In addition, participants will be introduced to available community resources and support services, enabling them to provide accurate information and guide seniors to suitable assistance when needed.

Through interactive discussions, case studies, role-play exercises, and real-life scenarios, participants will develop the practical skills needed to communicate confidently, provide emotional support, and make a positive impact on the lives of older adults in the community.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

• Understand the role, responsibilities, and boundaries of a community befriender.
• Apply effective communication and active listening skills to build rapport and provide emotional support to seniors.
• Conduct meaningful and safe home visits, including facilitating simple engagement activities.
• Recognise situations that require intervention and follow appropriate reporting and escalation procedures.
• Identify and share relevant community resources and support services available to seniors and their caregivers.
